TransgenderNI welcomes the New Decade, New Approach deal to get Stormont up and running, including the renewed attempt to bring forward a Bill Of Rights for Northern Ireland – although with no outright commitment to do so – and increasing funding for public services.
We also recognise, however, that despite an escalating crisis in trans healthcare and ongoing discrimination in access to services, trans people are not mentioned once in the document.
We’re encouraged by the inclusion of a sexual orientation strategy and gender strategy. Trans equality should be meaningfully included in the gender strategy, and we look forward to working to make that happen.
Our team will continue to work with all the parties to ensure that trans communities benefit from a restored Assembly, and to ensure that the human rights of trans people are respected and upheld.
