Since 2016, the Belfast Trans Resource Centre has been a home for trans, non-binary and questioning people in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We provide a unique community space organised by and for trans people themselves, for social, educational and activism-related events and activities. We’re the only such space in the UK and Ireland and have been overwhelmingly funded by the general public since we opened our doors. In 2022, we reopened after a long closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, we’re back to running regular community drop-ins and events and our team is working tirelessly to build a new social calendar for even better events and resources that meet the needs of trans, non-binary and questioning people going into 2023.
We’re so excited for 2023. Thank you so much for your support!
What does my donation pay for?
Our Centre is overwhelmingly funded by public donations, and we run our venue on a pretty tight budget. Our costs have increased recently especially due to rapidly increasing utility, electricity and heating bills, and through increased demand for our Travel Bursary which helps attendees and volunteers with travel costs. We blew through our goal last year of £25,000 (thank you so much!) and we’re now hoping to raise £35,000 for a full year of running costs. Your donations go towards:
- Rent, insurance and core building costs
We got lucky and have favourable rent, but it still adds up! In addition, we have comprehensive insurance for our venue and our team to keep everyone safe. - Staff and volunteer costs
We pay for both staff salaries plus training for them and our whole volunteer team. - Electricity, heating, broadband and more
It costs a lot to heat and light even a small commercial building, and our internet needs to be fast enough for our video game nights! - Activity & event costs
Even the smallest of events come with expenses like food and beverage costs. We also budget for other events around Pride and other notable dates each year, and have a small budget our volunteers can access for running events. - Travel Bursary
It is increasingly common that volunteers and attendees need help with travel costs to get to our Centre. We help by covering them when we can, and as the cost of living crisis worsens, this is a budget we hope to expand substantially. - Accessibility & equipment
Although we are lucky to have a relatively accessible, step-free venue, we try to hold a small budget to make improvements to ensure that disabled community members are able to attend fully. - Repairs
We haven’t had any big stuff break in a while but we’re responsible for most repairs to our building, meaning we need to be prepared.
